IMO | Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response

PPR 7

The 7th session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 7) was held in London from 17 to 21 February 2020.

This annual meeting deals with all matters relating to pollution prevention and response which falls within IMO’s remit, including the control and management of harmful aquatic organisms in ships’ ballast water and the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships.

The main highlights of the meeting were:

  • Draft MARPOL amendments agreed, on prohibiting the use and carriage for use as fuel of heavy fuel oil by ships in the Arctic waters;
  • Guidelines agreed on implementation of the IMO 2020 sulphur limit, verifying sulphur content of fuel on board;
  • Revised guidelines on exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) agreed;
  • Evaluation and harmonization of rules and guidance of discharges from exhaust gas cleaning systems;
  • Reduction of the impact on the Arctic of Black Carbon emissions from international shipping;
  • Prohibition of cybutryne in anti-fouling systems;
  • Revision of guidance on commissioning testing of ballast water management systems;
  • Review of the Biofouling Guidelines;
  • Draft circulars agreed on marine plastic litter.
