Nor-Shipping 2019 | IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap Compliance
- Details
- Published: 07 June 2019
Nor-Shipping 2019 conference, took place in Oslo this past week, 04-07 Jnue, and on the top of the list of concerns for shipowners was the implementation of the IMO's 2020 Sulphur Cap.
IMO's 2020 Sulphur Cap, which will take effect from 1 January 2020, requires that ships must run on fuel containing no more than 0.5% m/m of sulphur, unless having scrubbers installed. Namely, the options available for ship-operators to achieve compliance are:
- The use of low-sulphur fuel
- Installation of scrubbers
- The use of LNG
- The use of other new developed fuels
Experts from shipping, bunkering and insurance discussed the challenges for owners going into 2020 and concluded that early adopters of compliant bunkers face several risks. Main concern remains the increased cost of the new fuel, when testimonials from ship-operators that have already tried the new fuel supply are not very satisfying.
